Since its premiere, 2001: A Space Odyssey has been analyzed and interpreted by multitudes of people ranging from professional movie critics to amateur writers and science fiction fans. Kubrick encouraged people to explore their own interpretations of the film, and refused to offer an explanation of "what really happened" in the movie, preferring instead to let audiences embrace their own ideas and theories. In a 1968 interview with Playboy magazine, Kubrick stated:
"You're free to speculate as you wish about the philosophical and allegorical meaning of the film—and such speculation is one indication that it has succeeded in gripping the audience at a deep level—but I don't want to spell out a verbal road map for 2001 that every viewer will feel obligated to pursue or else fear he's missed the point." 첫 선을 보인 이래로, 전문 영화 평론가들로부터 아마추어 작가들, 그리고 공상 과학 팬들에 이르기까지 수많은 사람들이 [2001: 스페이스 오디세이]를 분석하고 해석해 왔다. 큐브릭은 사람들이 영화에 대한 자신만의 해석을 찾아 볼 것을 권하면서, 관객들이 관객 자신들의 생각과 이론을 채택하게끔 하는 쪽을 택하고 영화에서 "실제로는 무슨 일이 일어났는지"에 대해 직접 설명해 주는 것을 거부했다. 1968년 플레이보이 잡지와의 인터뷰에서 큐브릭은 이렇게 말했다.
"여러분은 마음껏 영화의 철학적·비유적 의미에 대해 생각해도 좋습니다(그렇게 곰곰이 생각한다는 것이야말로 영화가 관객을 깊이 사로잡았다는 하나의 지표인 것이죠). 제가 [2001]의 지도를 말로 그려내 보인다면, 모든 관객이 핵심을 놓칠까 두려워 그 지도를 쫓아가야만 한다고 생각하겠죠. 저는 그런 일을 하고 싶지는 않습니다."
저놈의 돌덩이
정말로 '마음껏 철학적·비유적 의미에 대해 생각해' 보게 만드는 영화다.
30년 전 영화라곤 상상할 수 없을 정도로 정교한 시각효과가 감탄스러울 따름이다.
영상과 음악의 상승작용이 이토록 강렬할 수도 있구나.
...그러나 한편으론 형이 영화 수업에서 들었다는 "이 영화는 3배속, 4배속으로 틀어도 보는 데 아무 지장이 없다"는 말에도 고개가 끄덕여진다.
